Want to make your lawn the envy of all your neighbours? Adding wildflowers can do just that.
Our Bursting Blooms Wildflower mix has been carefully blended with cornflower for rich blue hues, corn poppy for a pop of red, and black medik to support soil health.
These beautiful and bold additions are pollinator-friendly for bees, butterflies, and birds, all of which support the biodiversity of our gardens.
This guide will explore how to successfully sow, grow, and maintain your wildflower meadow.
1. When should I sow Bursting Blooms Wildflower Mix?
Sowing your wildflower seeds at the right time of year is crucial to their growth and development.
If you sow them at the wrong time of year, you may find that their growth is delayed, uneven, and weak due to stressors like extreme weather conditions.
Our Bursting Blooms Mix should be applied during the following seasons:
- Spring (March-June). Sowing during these months will ensure that your flowers are fully bloomed for summer
- Autumn (August to October). Planting seeds at this time allows them to establish before winter, resulting in earlier flowering the following year
2. How to sow Bursting Blooms Wildflower Mix?
Just like when sowing grass seeds, preparing your lawn is key to achieving a thriving wildflower meadow.
Follow these steps to prepare and sow your seeds successfully:
- Choose the right location. Wildflowers flourish best in areas with sunlight. Try to choose an area of your lawn that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily
- Clear the area. Make sure your lawn is free from debris and weeds, which can prevent your seeds from achieving optimal seed-to-soil contact
- Prepare the soil. Loosen and rake the soil to create a fine and even seedbed, essential for successful germination
- Evenly distribute. Spread the seeds evenly across the areas of your lawn that you wish to cover at a rate of 3-5g per m²
- Lightly rake. After sowing, lightly rake or press the seeds into the soil to ensure good contact. Make sure that you do not bury your seeds too deeply, as this can prevent your seeds from receiving light
- Water gently. Lightly water the area and keep the soil moist until the seedlings have established
3. How to grow wildflowers successfully
Once sown, your seeds will require proper care to ensure your wildflowers continue to flourish throughout the seasons.
Ideally, your seeds will start sprouting in approximately 2-4 weeks, depending on weather conditions.
Here is how you can effectively care for them:
- Weed management. Keep an eye out for any weeds sprouting up, as these can compete with your blooms for air, water, and nutrients. If you do spot any, hand-pull or carefully cut weeds below the soil line to remove them
- Water during dry periods. Wildflowers are known for their excellent drought tolerance. However, during prolonged dry periods, you should water them deeply to support their continued growth
- Avoid fertilising. Avoid applying fertilisers to your blooms, as wildflowers tend to thrive in low-fertility soils. Excess nutrients can reduce their flowering and can also promote weed growth
- Enjoy your blooms. Flowers will bloom from June to September, so enjoy the fruits of your labour
- Allow seeds to disperse naturally. Once the flowering season has ended, avoid mowing or disturbing the area and allow flowers to set seed by leaving the area untouched until late autumn
- Mow your lawn. Once the majority of seeds have dispersed, you can mow your lawn in late autumn to the correct height. Mowing your lawn helps to control any remaining weeds, allows seeds to have optimal contact with the soil, and prepares your lawn for the next growing season
- Remove debris. Stay on top of clearing leaves and debris from your lawn, as these can smother your seedlings and prevent them from receiving water, air, and nutrients
Give your lawn a much-needed boost of colour with our Bursting Blooms Wildflower Mix.
