a sprinkler watering a lawn

Your garden should be your outdoor haven in the warmer months, filled with vibrant blooms, the chirping of birds, and the flutter of butterflies.

Our Meadow Mix can help you achieve this with its carefully balanced blend of wildflowers and grasses, designed to provide bursts of colour and support local biodiversity.

It includes a vivid medley of Red Campion, Ragged Robin, and Slender Red Fescue, resulting in a colourful and dynamic outdoor space.

When should I sow Meadow Mix?

The time of year can make all the difference when sowing your wildflower blooms.

To ensure that you get the very best out of our Meadow Mix, we recommend sowing during the following seasons:

  • Spring (March-June). Sow seeds during this month to achieve a lush carpet of blooms in summer
  • Autumn (August-October). Plant seeds in autumn so seeds can establish before winter and produce radiant blooms in spring

How to sow Meadow Mix?

Preparation is key when it comes to setting your seeds up for growing success.

Without proper preparation, your seeds will not be able to flourish and may grow weak and uneven.

Follow these steps to create an environment where your wildflower seeds will thrive:

  • Choose the right location. Choose an area of your lawn that receives at least six hours of sunlight per day. Wildflowers typically thrive better in areas with full sunlight
  • Carry out weed control. Carefully remove any weeds that may have sprouted, as these will compete with your seeds for air, nutrients, and water
  • Get the soil ready. Wildflowers tend to prefer less fertile soils, so avoid areas with high fertility; otherwise, you may find that your grass will start outcompeting the flowers. Loosen the top 2-3 inches of soil to create a fine and even seedbed
  • Spread evenly. Scatter your seeds evenly at the recommended rate of 3-5g per m² for wildflowers only, or 5-10g per m² for a mix of wildflowers and grasses
  • Ensure seed-to-soil contact. Once sown, lightly rake over the soil surface to lightly cover your seeds and ensure good contact for germination
  • Lightly water. After sowing, aim to keep the soil moist to support the germination process and your seeds development. Make sure you do not overwater, as this can lead to waterlogging, which can disrupt your seeds

Tips for growing Meadow Mix successfully

Congratulations! You have successfully sown your seeds; however, the work does not stop there.

Your blooms will start sprouting at around 2-4 weeks depending on weather conditions, while grass species may germinate slightly earlier.

Here is the care you should be providing during the establishment phase:

  • Keep the soil moist. Maintain your soil’s moisture during early growth, particularly during dry spells when water will be scarce
  • Monitor for weeds. Keep an eye out for these common garden pests, and if spotted, carefully hand-pull or cut at the root to remove
  • Enjoy your blooms. You can expect your wildflowers to bloom from May to September; however, some perennial species may not flower during the first year
  • Allow seeds to set naturally. After blooming season, usually late autumn, allow flowers to disperse naturally and avoid disturbing the area
  • Cut back. To achieve the best results, you should cut back meadow grass to a height of approximately 4 inches in late autumn. Alternatively, you can also do this in spring before new growth begins. After cutting, remember to remove any organic material to prevent nutrient build-up or the creation of thatch

Create a timeless, biodiverse habitat that offers visual delight with our Meadow Mix.
