Creating a new lawn is an exciting time for any gardener, with the promise of a lush, green yard that can be enjoyed all year round.

However, it requires careful planning and preparation for any lawn to thrive.

That’s where our Perfect Prep Fertiliser comes in, providing the best start for new lawns.

Our slow-release formula has been expertly designed to be used before or after seeding, promoting healthy germination and strong root development.

Continue reading to learn how to use our Perfect Prep Fertiliser effectively…

1. Applying Nourish & Nurture Fertiliser

Fertilising your lawn effectively is key to any lawn’s growth, especially a new one.

You need to ensure it has all the nutrients it requires to flourish, come rain or shine.

For your fertiliser application to be successful, you need to do the following:

  • Clear your lawn. Remove any leaves, debris, or stones that might prevent your fertiliser from reaching the soil
  • Apply to dry grass. Always check that your grass is dry before applying fertiliser. Wet conditions can cause fertiliser to wash away, leaving your new lawn deprived of nutrients
  • Consider using a spreader. To ensure an even distribution of fertiliser, you may want to use a broadcast or drop spreader, depending on the size of your garden
  • Follow the application rate. Our Perfect Prep Fertiliser should be applied at a rate of 20g-35g per m²
  • Use the criss-cross method. Achieve even coverage by distributing half of the fertiliser when walking north to south and the other half when walking east to west. Following this method ensures even coverage, prevents missed areas, and reduces the risk of over-fertilising
  • Avoid applying on a stressed lawn. Never add fertiliser to a lawn that is already stressed, as this can cause further unnecessary damage. Instead, wait until conditions improve to start fertilising
  • Clean up any excess. Make sure no excess fertiliser is left behind on paths, driveways, and patios to avoid staining and unnecessary waste caused by runoff

2. Watering after application

Watering is a key part of the fertilisation process, as it helps to activate the fertiliser.

Without activation, fertiliser will simply sit on the blades of your grass, eventually scorching the blades.

Water dissolves the fertiliser granules, ensuring this doesn’t happen, and instead, that they are absorbed into the soil.

Here are our tips for watering after fertilising:

  • Water as soon as possible. After applying your fertiliser, you should water your lawn immediately so it can be absorbed into the soil and the nutrients can be released
  • Irrigate if needed. If your area is going through a dry spell and there is no rain forecast for 48 hours, you may need to supply the water yourself
  • Avoid overwatering. Excessive water, whether that is manual or due to the weather, can be harmful to your lawn, especially after applying fertiliser. Too much water can cause nutrient runoff and leaching, reducing the effectiveness of the fertiliser

3. How often should I apply Perfect Prep Fertiliser?

Fertilising your lawn regularly can provide numerous benefits that support your lawn’s overall growth and development.

It can support your grass by replenishing lost nutrients, encouraging even growth, and increasing resilience against weeds and pests.

Here’s how often you should be applying our Perfect Prep Fertiliser:

  • Before or after. You can apply Perfect Prep before or immediately after seeding to encourage healthy germination and root establishment
  • Reapply if needed. Optionally, our fertiliser can be reapplied 4-6 weeks after the initial application to encourage ongoing root development and rapid growth for new grass
  • Consider the seasons. Ideally, when you should fertilise your lawn can depend on your grass type. For example, cool-season grasses should be fertilised in early spring and autumn, while warm-season grasses require fertilising in late spring or late summer

Create a lawn you can be proud of with our Perfect Prep Fertiliser.
