Summer Shield – Fertiliser – Product Guide

a mossy lawn in the spring

Summer can be a tough month for lawns, with its high temperatures, lack of rainfall, and increased foot traffic.

During these months, your lawn care focus will switch up to maintain your lawn’s health and protect it from heat stress and weeds.

Our Summer Shield Fertiliser is fast-acting with nitrogen to boost your lawn’s growth and slow-releasing nutrients to support your lawn all summer long.

It also protects your lawn from the heat stress of summer and promotes weed resistance.

To get the best out of our Summer Shield Fertiliser, we recommend carrying out the following steps:

1. Applying Summer Shield Fertiliser

Proper application of fertiliser is essential to maintaining a healthy and vibrant lawn, especially during summer.

Fertilising your lawn correctly ensures that your lawn is receiving all the necessary nutrients it needs to thrive and be more tolerant of stress factors like heat and drought.

Here is how to apply our Summer Shield Fertiliser:

  • Remove debris. Clear your lawn of any debris, stones, and weeds that could prevent your fertiliser from having optimal contact with the soil
  • Mow your lawn. Before spreading fertiliser on your lawn, you should mow your lawn to the appropriate height (1-1.5 inches). Mowing your lawn beforehand will allow the fertiliser to reach the soil more effectively
  • Keep it dry. Fertiliser should be applied to dry grass, as wet conditions can cause the fertiliser to wash away before it can be absorbed into the soil
  • Use a spreader. Just like grass seed, you can use a broadcast or drop spreader to achieve an even application. Our Summer Shield Fertiliser has an application rate of 35-50g per m².
  • Apply in two directions. Ensure all areas are evenly covered by spreading half the fertiliser walking north to south. Then, spread the other half walking east to west. Following a criss-cross pattern makes sure all areas are covered and prevents missed patches
  • Avoid stress conditions.  Do not apply any fertiliser if your lawn is under stress from heat or drought, as this can cause further damage. Ideally, you should wait until conditions have improved before feeding your lawn
  • Clean up any excess. Sweep up any excess granules that remain on patios, paths, and driveways to avoid staining.

2. Watering after application

Once you have successfully applied your fertiliser, you can move on to the next important step, watering.

Watering is essential for activating fertilisers and promoting nutrient absorption.

Here are our tips for watering following fertilising:

  • Water immediately. You should water your lawn thoroughly straight after fertilising to help dissolve the granules, allowing the nutrients to absorb into the soil effectively
  • The 48 hour rule. If no rain falls within 48 hours, you should irrigate the area to ensure that the fertiliser is properly activated
  • Regular irrigation. After fertilising, you should try to maintain a consistent watering schedule, providing around one inch of water per week. However, your schedule should always be tailored to the weather conditions to avoid over or under-watering

3. How often should you apply Summer Shield Fertiliser?

Now that you have mastered the art of fertilising, you will want to ensure that you follow a regular schedule.

Applying fertiliser to your lawn consistently ensures that your lawn is receiving the nutrients it needs to thrive all year round.

Here are some key practices:

  • Keep it regular. Ideally, you should be feeding your lawn every 6 to 8 weeks from late spring to early autumn. We recommend fertilising during this time, as most grass types will be in an active period of growth
  • Avoid over-application. It is true what they say; you can have too much of a good thing. Always follow the recommended application rates and frequencies to avoid over-fertilising your lawn. Failure to do this could result in a nutrient imbalance or scorched grass

Keep your lawn healthy and protected all summer long with our Summer Shield Fertiliser.
